  This medal was chosen as the 76th issue of the prestigious Society of Medalists series in 1967.

  The medal's obverse bears pentamerous design with segments showing bird, fish, butterfly, serpent and mountain goat.

  The reverse shoes conifer trees before mountains, sun rising behind. Below, IN WILDNESS IS THE / PRESERVATION / OF THE WORLD / THOREAU; signed to left, DRM / © / 1967

  Miller was inspired by Thoreau's writings. The quote on the reverse is from Thoreau's essay "Walking". In the words of the sculptor:

  Had this quotation from Thoreau been written today instead of over a hndred years ago, he might, in desperation, have worded it to read - 'In Wildness Is The Preservation Of The Sanity Of The World.' His words are now more timely in our day than in his... wildness itself must be preserved in order that it may serve as a stabilizer of the human spirit.

  At least one subscriber had issues with this medal. He described Miller's work as a mere reprise of Gertrude Lathrop's 18th issue and as "conservation propaganda in medallic form."

  The medal is of pentagonal shape and measures 69mm. It was produced by the Medallic Art Company of New York which struck 992 pieces in bronze.
