This medal was chosen as the 78th issue of the prestigious Society of Medalists series in 1968.

The reverse bears a spider web with plant below within raised rim.
Iles chose the scientist to represent the quest for knowledge and the spider to represent patience and perseverance.
The medal measures 73mm in diameter and was struck by the Medallic Art Company of New York. Its reported mintage is 809 pieces in bronze.
