    This medal was chosen as the 60th issue of the prestigious Society of Medalists series in 1959.

    The reverse bears three flying geese against clouds. Below, AND / EVERY WINGED FOWL

    Katharine Lane Weems excelled at animal bronzes and drawings and her SOM medal certainly bears witness to her talent and skill in this area. In her "Message from the Artist" Weems wrote:

    "The medal was designed as a reminder that God created animals, like the puma, of absorbing interest and beauty and quite apart from man, and that, despite jet planes and guided missiles, wild geese still fly the skies."

    This medal measures 73mm in diameter and was struck by the Medallic Art Company of New York. The reported production quantity of this medal is 749 in bronze.
