This medal was chosen as the 112th issue of the prestigious Society of Medalists series in 1985.
The obverse bears nude male trying and failing to grab nude female across circular center hole. Both are mostly contained in square field around center hole. Below, ESCAPE
The reverse bears same figures but this time male succeeds in grabbing female's arm. Below, CAPTURE; in lower right of square, script RM
The inspiration for Richard McDermott Miller's medal came from the sculptural metopes of Doric Greek architecture. He wrote in the brochure that accompanied the medal:
"I felt that I could create a medal using this metope idea, but I wanted the figures to be in the full round. Also, I wanted to create a feeling of openness because 'metope' literally translates to 'space between'. That is why I have cut actual openings through the medal. They let each side flow into the other. Obverse and reverse connect in the center."
The medal measures 73mm in diameter and was produced by the Medallic Art Company. Its reported mintage is 750 pieces in silver-plated copper.
